Adam Milstein is a smiley in a sea of frownies when it comes to optimism about Jewish/Israeli identity. This is because he has a deep understanding of the fact that Judaism is something so deep and long-lasting that it will never die out. It appears that Jewish and Israeli identities are going away into a pit of non-existence. However, anybody who thinks this is short sighted. Judaism is something that has lasted for so long, through thick and thin, and is still running strong. The trend of identity loss is just a drop in the bucket, and Jewish and Israeli identities are not going away. The Old Testament is basically a record of what happened to Jews throughout the ages. Some people think that during the past 80 years, Jewish identity has faded. However, in the Bible, 80 years is spoken about as if it is just a petty drop in the bucket. After such spans of years, the Jewish people have experienced thick and thin, and have come out victorious.
Adam Milstein has fulfilled an important role as a Jew by having children. Him and his wife conceived three daughters, who are now grown up. Their daughters conceived three grandchildren. Conception is very important to Judaism, due to the fact that it results in more Jews in the world. Jews are supposed to “be fruitful and multiply.”
However, the “be fruitful and multiply” thing is backfiring in Israel. Adam Milstein knows that the people who should multiply—people who appreciate a modern, secular culture and are not religious extremists—are the ones who are not multiplying. They are running away from Israel due to the poor job prospects in the country. However, ultra-Orthodox groups like the Haredi are staying in Israel and are multiplying exponentially. Adam Milstein knows that these people are Jews and and that they should be respected for that reason. However, they lack appreciation for math and science, and their schools show this fact. The problem is that to rise up in the modern world, Israel has to have highly educated people who are productive.
