During the early stages of the business, Min-Liang Tan and his co-founder didn’t exactly know what they were doing. They started out with online sales and a website selling their creations. But for a while, the business was purely profit-driven. “We just wanted to have the coolest stuff,” Min-Liang Tan explained. “And the coolest stuff meant spending a lot of time thinking about how to build something that would make people happy.
The duo set up their first business, Alienware, in 2003 as a PC-based laptop manufacturer, but the company wasn’t successful enough. The founders, however, were able to pull in the audience, and the product was popular enough to help them refine their strategy: The computer enthusiasts were willing to pay for a high-quality experience. The company slowly built up its performance on these consumers, but they still had problems at the distribution level.
In 2005, with his partner Robert Krakoff, he launched Razer Inc, a gaming peripherals company with an emphasis on high-performance devices, to provide a one-stop solution to gamers. The business first achieved substantial revenue in 2008, but it was not until 2012 when Razer truly broke out. Razer’s product offerings are as varied as its customers.
The first of those services: a desktop-gaming system that helped gamers experience what it was like to have their own living room gaming set-up. The second service, which was even more novel at the time, was Twitch – an app that enabled users to broadcast their gaming sessions live for followers to watch.
By 2013, the Razer CEO had the gaming system in place – and they had created an entire market. Razer is now one of the most successful companies to emerge from South Korea and it’s still building its customer base. One way it does that is through partnerships. For example, it’s partnered with Hulu, one of the most popular streaming platforms in the U.S., to bring viewers streaming live in-game content and competitions.
